Radio Amateur's Exam

Next course

The Sandton Amateur Radio Club will again offer a course leading to the Radio Amateur's Examination in May 2012.

This course will be of interest to anyone who wishes to obtain an amateur radio licence, and also to anyone travelling around southern Africa who makes use of radio communication.

The course begins on 1 February 2012 and extends over 16 weeks, up to the examination on 26th May.

Lectures are held every Wednesday evening at the National Amateur Radio Centre located in the grounds of Sentech, Octave Street, Radiokop.

The course includes the required HF assessment, and an optional practical Antenna Building Day.

Registration takes place at the first session on 1st February @ 19:00, and includes a general introduction to Amateur Radio and to the course. There is no charge for this first session and anyone interested in finding out what amateur radio is all about, is welcome to attend this introductory session.

General information

Twice yearly the club hosts a 16 week course, which is held at the National Amateur Radio Centre (NARC) in Honeydew. These classes normally take place on a Wednesday evening from 19h00 until 21h00 for the Class A license (this was previously a restricted licence with ZR call-sign - the regulations are under discussion on the future of this as the ZR licence has been discontinued). For more information relating to the license classes available in South Africa, please click here - but please bear in mind that these classes are under discussion and that the ZR class has been discontinued.

The RAE lectures are presented by volunteers who take the education of prospective new Radio Amateurs extremely seriously.

Although it is not compulsory to attend our lecture series, it is strongly recommended that you do attend these classes. During the presenting of the lectures, we are able to supply you with the necessary insight on how all the bits and pieces fit together. We provide practical demonstrations as well as having practical workshops which will equip you with the necessary knowledge and information to allow you to understand the basic and advanced principles of Amateur Radio.

We do however require dedication to learning the material and completion of homework which we supply you. This must not been seen as a bind, but will assist you in passing this technical course.

There are some costs involved in attending the course and those costs will be provided on application.
